frequently asked questions about waxing
Learn the basics from a Pro...
Q. Does waxing hurt?
A.
It hurts more the first time than any other time because you are
pulling out 100% of the hair, your nerves are on edge, and you don't
know what to expect. But, it is a quick, temporary sting that stops
hurting right away. Follow the tips below and you'll be fine. The next
time is much easier! After your first wax, the hair grows back finer and
more sparse, becomes less prickly between waxings, and retains its
smoothness much longer.
Q. How long do I have to let my hair grow out?
A.
As long as possible. Seriously, the longer the better... 3-4 weeks or
1/2 inch, whichever is longer. The more follicles/roots we can pull, the
cleaner the wax, the longer it is going to last and the happier you are
going to be! It can be hard to let it grow but the longer the hair is,
the cleaner it will turn out.
MOSS RULES TO WAX BY:
1. Initially grow hair out 3-4 weeks or 1/2 inch, whichever is longer. For best results, the longer the better.
2. Do not ingest caffeine.
3. If OK with your doctor, take a little ibuprofen one hour ahead.
4.
If your skin is sensitive prior to and during your period, you may want
to avoid waxing. However, if you don't mind, we don't either.
Q. How long will it last?
A.
In order to keep the hair coming in at a reduced rate, you would come
in about every 3-6 weeks. The discomfort would be about 1/3 of what it
originally was because you would be having 1/3 the hair removed. If you
follow the "Moss Rules to Wax By" and come in on our recommended
schedule, you should be a "Happy Camper" by your second visit! And that
is what we want, as close to painfree wax as possible!
Q. Are there any topical creams or medications that I should avoid prior to getting waxed?
A.
Yes! Internal Medication such as Accutane and topicals that include
Retin-A, Salicylic Acid, Glycolic
Acid,Differin,Tazorac,Avage,Strivectin,Renova,ProActive,Avita,Benzoyl
Peroxide. All of the above mentioned can enhance skin sensitivity that
could lead to lifting of the skin when removing hair.
Q. It's so hard to let the hair grow in the summer - ideas?
A. Try boy shorts, board shorts, sarongs or tankinis so you don't have to shave. In some cases, bleach may work.
Q. Are there any age restrictions on waxing?
A.
In fact there are. Moss is a family-friendly studio, meaning you must
be at least 18 years old, or have parental approval/signature, to use
our waxing services.
Q. Is it OK to shave between wax appointments?
A.
Waxing slows down and reduces hair growth. Hair also grows much thinner
thus making it easier to remove and less painful when waxed. Shaving
just one time in between will negate all that is gained from waxing and
can further irritate follicles which can cause ingrown hair. So, no, we
don’t advise shaving in between.
Q. How long will it last?
A. You should have 2 to 3 weeks of fairly smooth skin. We recommend booking appointments every 4 to 6 weeks.
Q. What can I expect afterwards?
A.
The waxed skin might be tender for a couple of days. We advise taking
Ibuprofen to decrease inflammation and skin sensitivity. Skin may break
out in tiny bumps, especially when waxed for the first time. This
reaction is normal and clears up quickly. We recommend applying
Hydrocortisone cream to speed healing. A thin layer of Neosporin can
sometimes help if the bumps have a white head.
Q. What can I do about ingrown hair?
A.
Exfoliating in the shower with an exfoliating glove everyday or at
least everyother day helps to keep the skin free from cellular buildup
which can trap hair. We carry Ingrown Hair Help pads which help to
prevent and clear the skin of ingrown hair and red bumps.
Q. Can I tan before or after I get waxed?
A.
You should wait 3-5 days to get waxed after you have tanned. You should
never get waxed if you are sunburned or even if skin is pink. The very
top layer of skin could pull off or "lift" which is painful and can
result in scabbing. You should wait for 3 days after you have waxed to
tan. Waxed skin is more photosensitive and is more susceptible to
burning.
